Međimurje County Museum - Čakovec or Zrinski Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
The Čakovec Museum of Međimurje, housed in the Čakovec or Zrinski Castle, was founded in 1954 as the Municipal Museum. The permanent display was opened in 1955. Today the Čakovec Museum of Medimurje consists of several departments: Archaeological, Cultural-Historical, Historical, and Ethnographic. It also includes the Art Gallery with the Ladislav Kralj of Medimurje Memorial Collection, the Exhibition Hall, and the Museum Library.

The museum is housed in the castle's main palace which got its baroque style after having been severely damaged during an earthquake in 1738. Its atrium is also used as an outdoor theatre during the summer months.

The castle has been in the hands of several noble houses, such as the House of Zrinski, Lackovoc, Ermust, Celje, and Festetics. It was the scene of the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy (17th century) against the Habsburg dominance.
